Water 7 was really something special. Enies Lobby was run pretty mediocre for being the symbol of justice without means to stop devil fruit users with sea prism stone technologies which I would have liked to see. As it stands now the Straw Hats were the first to win in an attack but I honestly feel like someone like Ace could have done that all by themself, apart from winning against all the CP9 members that is. However, the island of Water 7 was beautiful, memorable, had politics and a structure that we understood due to its backstory without being overbearing. The people were memorable even the unnamed like the guy who gave Usopp food and supplies for the Merry when he was out alone. The named people were even better with this arc having some of the best supporting characters of any, Iceberg, the Shipwrights, the Frankies, Kokoro, Chimney, and Gonbe were all great and lively parts of Water 7. Franky being a new member and having a fascinating backstory featuring Tom was great. CP9 was the best group of villains One Piece has seen but my personal favorite major villain is still Crocodile. Thinking of the past villainous groups no individuals in them stand out as much as the likes of Khalifa, Jabra, and Kaku who all had fascinating personalities without coming off as simple either. Most of the fights were good, Zoro's I had some problems with but it ended phenomenally, and Luffy's final fight with Lucci was magnificent due to the surrounding fight and Usopp's pep talk and the dynamic of strength vs perseverance to the point of near suicide even if I had problems with Luffy's gears and the six powers, it made up for it. All the other fights showed the good sides of our characters, Franky's, in particular, developed him so much while being utterly awesome. Sanji's was rule of cool and super satisfying. Chopper's was brilliantly directed and genuinely scary while also developing him in terms of resolve, and his power in a believable and interesting way. It developed the cast so much. We saw new sides of everyone as it took tones One Piece has never dared to go to with the likes of Usopp losing confidence and respect in himself and fighting Luffy leading to Luffy actually crying over having to betray a nakama. Ultimately Usopp hopefully learning from Sanji and not having to fight that he is valuable, that he can do stuff they can't, even if that doesn't involve fighting. Robin went through a ridiculous amount of development, primarily wanting to die to wanting to live but now we understand her. We understand everyone on a deeper level now, some more than others is my point. I think It's awesome how we got to see Luffy break, we got to finally understand his limits.
All that said, I wasn't a fan of the last minute powers like Sanji's devil foot(okay I was a fan but I wish it wasn't so abrupt), the Luffy gears not getting screen time before this in any way, or Zoro's one shot on Kaku after a joke of a fight. Nor was I a fan of the six powers removing strategy in Luffy's fights and threatening it in the others fights. It came with power levels and power scaling techniques for Luffy to fight, might is right style, rather than countering devil fruit powers or tactics at times. The six powers don't even seem believable in a One Piece sense, these guys were practically demigods. And to get back to praise, every darn episode had a new set piece to remember and it broke the formula in so many ways, the fights and storytelling was dynamic with everyone crossing into each other's paths and changing paths. It wasn't one on ones being told the entire time, stories from point a to b, there were constant curve balls being thrown, Usopp and Robin leaving, Sanji being on the train with Franky and Usopp tied up and the others trying to catch up, monster Chopper on the loose, Usopp not getting a fight despite being set up to have one to prove a point to him, the Khalifa fight having so many people play a part in it including having Sanji lose. A lot of stuff was not predictable in the best way possible, the flow was real, it didn't feel scripted or structured. For the set pieces we had Luffy terrorizing the navy by himself, Franky burning the blueprint, the Straw Hat-CP9 standoff, the "I WANT TO LIVE", Chopper transforming, Franky threatening to kill him and Fukurou, "Sogeking, shoot through that flag", the Merry Klabautermann coming to save the day, and many more. I could honestly pull one out of the majority of these episodes. It just kept getting more intense and awesome without ever overdoing it.
So, despite something like Arlong being more consistent, Water 7 definitely brought more to the table. It has much higher highs and lower lows in my opinion, but it would be hard to say it's not the best One Piece has ever been. It's definitely up there for me as my favorite arc. One Piece totally holds 3 of my top 5 shounen arc now, Arlong, Alabasta, and this one(the other two are Demon King Piccolo from Dragon Ball, and Chapter Black from Hakusho).
Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to express the things I thought this arc did amazing and poorly all jumbled together because I've already gone over every single part of this in more detail as they came up in the past, it's just nice to get the majority of my thoughts together in one big post.
And, for this episode in particular, it was an awesome escape. People have already gone into the details so I'll keep it short. Sanji coming in clutch and closing the gates, Nami's confidence taking control of the situation, the Straw Hats fighting against the cannon balls coming in, Robin shattering Spanda's bones, the Straw Hat's reunion, it was brilliant.
I wonder if Franky catching Robin bridal style was foreshadowing ;) ; ) ;)
I'm so glad that Spandam's lie that Aokiji ordered Robin's death was heard by the admiral aboard. That was enough to make me so happy that he'd finally get what he deserved and that was even before Robin shattered his spine. |
