Dirk Zeller is a German-born marine biologist, known for his collaborative research on the global impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems.[1][2], and for early pioneering work on the use of ultrasonic telemetry on coral reef fishes in Australia[3][4][5][6].  He is Professor of Marine Conservation in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia (UWA), a member of the UWA Oceans Institute[7] and the Director of the Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean research initiative[8], which partners with the Sea Around Us initiative in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Zeller is also an Affiliate Professor in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at UBC[9].

Zeller has a background in tropical marine biology and fisheries ecology from James Cook University, as well wider as interests in marine biology, fisheries science, sustainability, food and nutritional security and resource economics. He also has a particular interest in historical fisheries ecology.

Biography

[edit]

Dirk Zeller was born and raised near Freiburg in the Rhein Valley of southwestern Germany. His youth was often spent outside in the fields and woods of the Black Forrest. Growing up around horses, pets and nature instilled a great interest for the environment and wildlife.

Zeller attended the German high school system (Gymnasium) at the St. Landolin Schule Ettenheim before graduating with the Abitur in 1981. Thereafter, he qualified as commercial SCUBA instructor in Spain before fulfilling his national service with the Bundeswehr, in the Fallschirmjägerbataillon 251 in Calw, Germany.

Upon completion of his service, Zeller attended James Cook University in Townsville, Australia to pursue a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Marine Biology and Zoology from 1983-1985. This was followed by an Honours Research project in 1986 and other research opportunities. Following some travel in Europe, Zeller returned to James Cook University as an Associate Lecturer before completing his Ph.D. during which he successfully pioneered the use of ultrasonic telemetry (fish tracking using acoustic tags) on coral reef fishes in Australia[3][4][5][6][10]

In 1999, Zeller was offered a postdoctoral position followed by a research associate position in the newly established Sea Around Us under the leadership of Professor Daniel Pauly at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (formerly UBC Fisheries Centre) at the University of British Columbia. Zeller was the Senior Scientist and Project Manager of the Sea Around Us from 2007 to 2017[1][2][11].

In 2017, he received, together with Daniel Pauly, the Ocean Award in the Science category[12] for publications contributing to marine conservation and ocean health[13][14][15].

Zeller was appointed Professor of Marine Conservation at the University of Western Australia in 2017 and established the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean initiative as the first geographic node of the global Sea Around Us efforts[16].

In 2021, Zeller was named Australia’s Top Researcher in his field by The Australian's 2021 Research Magazine[17][18]. The Magazine’s List is a roll call of the best researchers and the best research institutions in Australia in 250 individual fields of research.

Publications

[edit]

Professor Dirk Zeller is a well regarded and highly published author[19] of scientific contributions. He publishes in the primary literature, in books (e.g., Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries)[20], and in dedicated book chapters and research reports.
